Book Tour {Excerpt} -- Maelstrom by Francis Guenette

About the Book

Title: Maelstrom
Author: Francis Guenette
Genre: Action / Thriller
A shot is fired into the still night air and a young woman dies on Suicide Ridge. A dangerous game has begun. Over the course of one blistering, hot week, winds of change sweep through an isolated valley in small town America.
Sheriff Bert Calder, with the help of Mayor Amos Thatcher, has held the town of Haddon under his thumb for twenty-five years. As things spin out of control, Calder works the angles, ensuring he can make the most of the upheaval that is to come.
Rafael Destino, facing his own mortality, races against time to gain control of the railroad – a lifeline essential to the town’s survival. His goal – to financially destroy Thatcher, the man he believes responsible for the death of his beloved sister. His tool – adopted son Myhetta. But how far down the road of revenge will Rafael push the young man who owes him everything?
Myhetta is poised on the edge of controlling Destino Enterprises, the job he has been groomed for. While money, power and influence are his to command, the past continues to torment him.
In a clash of powerful men, with fathers pitted against sons, no one will be left unscathed. Maelstrom is a page turner that speeds along like a runaway train.

Book Excerpt

Myhetta could hear Thatcher screaming into the phone down the hall. He gazed from the white socks that graced Laura’s small feet, up along her golden-brown legs and over the robe that hung open at the top of her lace-edged nightgown. He took in the way her hair was pulled into a tangled mess on top of her head. A confused look crossed his face as he said, “I’m not sure why, but you look very pretty this morning.”
As his words registered, she reached back with one hand to steady herself against the countertop. A wave of colour started low on her throat and swept up her face. Her other hand moved to touch her hair. The reaction was so innocently feminine that it slammed Myhetta with a sudden desire. He wanted to touch her. Being a man who often took thought into action, he crossed the distance between them and brought his mouth down onto hers in a quick kiss. As he raised his head, he held her chin and said, “Whatever you might know about Gracie, you keep it quiet. Do you hear me?” She nodded; he let her go and went outside.
Laura heard Amos shout into the phone, “You’ve kept me standing here all this time and he isn’t even in the office?” The phone slammed down and her husband stumbled back into the kitchen. Through the doorway, he could see Casey sitting in the passenger seat of the jeep as Myhetta backed down the driveway. Amos tore out of the house. “You stop this second, Breed. Casey, get out of there.”
Casey waved at his father and shouted, “He’s just giving me a ride to work,” as the jeep turned onto the road and roared away.
Laura was still leaning against the kitchen counter when Amos stormed back into the room. He gave his wife a look of disgust as he bellowed, “What the hell’s the matter with you? I’m the one with the problems here.” He sat down in a chair and forced himself to take several deep breaths. He spoke as if to himself, “What is that crazy bastard, Destino up to? I have to get to the bank.” Without giving her another glance, he grabbed his suit jacket, shrugged into it and strode out of the room.
Laura felt hot tears begin to roll down her face. Years of coiled and frustrated desire had erupted like a spewing volcano when Myhetta kissed her. She could still feel the weight of his mouth against hers. Replaying that sweet second when his tongue had caressed her closed lips, she flushed with shame. This was no time for a middle-aged infatuation. No matter what Amos had to say, tomorrow she and Casey would be on that train.
